Pink Shirt Day to stand up against Bullying 💗 #EGSS #okotoksschools #pinkshirtday #standup #endbullying #choosekindness
We hope everyone had a great week off. Teachers had two days in Okotoks for Faith Days and two days downtown for their annual Teacher’s Convention. It was a great way to continue as lifelong learners and recharge the batteries. A huge thank you to Susan Rasmussen who has served on the convention board this year planning professional development for us all and had an extremely busy few days.
Congratulations to Mr. Bassett on receiving the Christian Witness Award this week at Faith Days 🙏
Just a reminder that Monday we will be having our Pink Shirt Day to stand up against Bullying 💗
We had another exciting day for our fourth day of Carnaval. This morning we had a group called Folklofolie join us from Quebec to teach us all about the French culture. We also had Cabane à Sucre here and everyone was able to enjoy a little some maple taffy.
We had amazing weather for today’s outside Carnaval activities. This morning our French Immersion students took part in activities and in the afternoon our English classes took part. The students really enjoyed their day making ice castles, playing hockey, participating in canoe relays and playing winter golf and it was great to get outside and enjoy the beautiful day.
Our grade 5/6 drama group has been hard at work for the last month learning their lines and practicing their songs and have made huge improvements already. Come the beginning of May they will be performing High School Musical for the school community and it’s something we are all looking forward to. Keep up the great work!
The students in Mme Dubois-Jolin’s class also turned out some amazing Alien Projects. Keep up the great work grade sixes!
💖 Happy Valentine's Day 💖
All the hard work they have put in has really paid off for the students in Mlle Deon’s class. This afternoon they presented their Alien Projects to their parents and other classes throughout the school. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn more about the solar system and to practice their oral and written French.
We had our open ceremony this morning so it’s official - Carnaval Week has begun. We were even lucky enough to get a little snow this morning to start us off. It should be an amazing week with lots of great activities!
💖 Tomorrow is Valentine's Day💖
It's been a while but Popcorn Days are officially back, starting this Wednesday! The grade six students will once again be selling bags of popcorn for $1 each in order to help raise money for their year-end Grad Camp. Students wishing to buy bags of popcorn are asked to bring in money to their teachers. Money will be collected on the day of the sale so students can bring in money on Wednesday.
Our grade sixes had a great time today joining Mr. Durbano in the Astrolab to learn all about our night sky. The astrolab is like a mini-planetarium and supports the grade six science curriculum unit on Sky Science. The second picture shows the constellations in the night sky.
Visible Learning is essential in our EGSS school. Visible learning is where we build the learning through anchor charts on the walls with the students. The walls help them to learn and become more independent learners because they know how to use these tools to help guide them. We learned about it through John Hattie and Peter Liljedahl, and now teachers know how to use the walls to teach the students. They co-construct all of the walls, posters, chart boards, etc. with our students and the walls become tools that grow with the students. Any visitor can walk in the room of a classroom and know what the students are learning about without asking. All they have to do is look at the walls! The best part...the students can speak to their learning and know how to use the walls as tools to help them problem solve and become more independent learners! Next time, you visit a classroom, check out their walls! They are magical!
📢 TUESDAY 📢 ⚽⚾🏈🏉🏐🏒
Just a reminder 🎆
Today we tried something new....and it was amazing. We did professional development on a regular school day right inside of classrooms with the kids. Our Associate Superintendent and Director of Curriculum ran a Number Sense Routine PD Day inside classrooms. The first half of the day consisted of gathering half of our teachers from grade k-4 while the other half took their students and combined them with their own classes along with some substitute teachers to help them out. The teachers did a short conversation and pd with our leaders to set up the day. Next they went into 5 teachers classrooms to watch them demonstrate a 10 minute number routine with their own students. They rotated classrooms for about an hour. Then they came back to the room to unpack what they saw and plan for next steps. The second half of the day the teachers who were demonstrating got to exchange classes with the morning observation teachers and repeat the process. They met, they observed, they unpacked. We also had a few subs around the building who were such a great help to ease the flow of the day. This was one of the best pds we have done because we were tapping into our experts right inside of our school and the students got to see the teachers as learners! Thank you to the students, teachers, and Mrs. Kuemper and Mrs. MacDonald for the learning!
